MMS Ltd carried out the complete engineering services design, plant selection and installation of 5 new Medium Temperature Hot Water (MTHW) boilers at LS Donnington (MoD Site) near Telford, Shropshire. As part of their ongoing commitment to reducing costs for the MoD under their Regional Prime Contract Central, Carillion Enterprise appointed MMS Ltd to carry out an urgent replacement of 5 old MTHW sectional boilers which had become unreliable.
Firstly the existing boilers were thoroughly inspected to establish the source of the reliability problems. An improved water treatment system and maintenance regime was subsequently proposed for the new boilers to reduce thermal inefficiencies and overcome long term reliability problems associated with an exceptionally hard water supply at the site.
5 new 3 pass wet back steel boilers of between 2 and 3MW capacity were installed in 3 separate Boiler houses around the site. To ensure on time heat availability a fast track programme of works on site was necessary, and it was therefore essential that the works in each Boiler house took place simultaneously.
Following the strip out works MMS surveyed each Boiler house in detail, taking accurate site measurements of existing headers / pipe connection points etc. and produced detailed fabrication drawings to allow a large volume of pipework to be fabricated off site ahead of new boiler deliveries. MMS organised their installation teams to assemble the complex layout of pre-fabricated sections in such a way that the new boilers could be offloaded and slotted into position towards the end of the programme.
The complete installation was implemented on time, within budget, and with minimal disruption to the site, services and occupants. There were zero accidents and no reportable near misses. To date the new boiler installations have performed with a 100% reliability record since completion.

How we added value
MMS worked closely with the client to correctly identify problems with the existing system and propose measures to prevent re-occurrence. MMS embraced the challenge of the fast track programme adopting pre-fabrication methods and flexible working arrangements on site. We repaired, refurbished and reused a large number of existing valves making savings of approx £30K.
